RECYCLING WORKS: the Movie

A lovely commission and the best film to come out of workshops so far.

The concept was to produce a film for schools in the borough of Guildford, Primary and Secondary, made during workshops at secondary schools- featuring the young people that the younger kids look up to.

Once myself and Jane Alexander of Guildford Recycling had the storyboard in place, we went into schools with the film as a professional project:
At each school we would introduce the project brief, Jane was the client and producer, I was directing and the students were model-making and animating.

‘NATIONAL HEALTH’

This was a commission direct from the NHS to celebrate their 60th birthday.

The film needed to relate to the Halas & Bachelor film of 1948- ‘Your Very Good Health’ (below) and contain messages about the Next Stage Review and general healthy living tips.

I produced and animated the whole thing, from start to finish. This was the first time I’ve directed a big crew of animators, working with them to do things like painting the painted bits frame by frame, doing the clean up and composite bits as they came in, and I worked with Chris on the Stop-Motion stuff.

Working with a big team was amazing, and I am, now, quite happy with the result, though I would still love to tweak the sound where it’s a bit fuzzy.

Many thanks to Nathalie at Nexus who met up with me to work out the budget, to John and John for their voice skills, and to Joan at the RCA who gave me space to work in and generally midwifed the project in the first place.

This pop promo for Kid Carpet - I Don’t Want to Fall in Love with You, from the album ‘Casio Royale’- had a six week turn around that turned into eight weeks.

But... it still came (just) in time and in (lo) budget, it’s a big success on MTV and YouTube, and I am becoming more and more proud of it as the pain dies down...

I was commissioned to make this film by ‘LBRUT’ to inform children and young people of the boroughs ‘Every Child Matters’ policy in their own words.

‘Every Child Matters’ is a range of measures attempting to join up children’s services within local government.
Each borough across the country had it’s own proposals, and it’s own way of publicising them.

LBRUT made a booklet and a DVD of this film and distributed it to every school in the borough and screened it at a number of events.

Education project and film. Made in partnership with National Portrait Gallery, Orleans House Gallery and participants of Positive Activities for Young People.
This film came out of a series of workshops with young people, visiting the gallery and coming up with back-stories for the characters in the collection.
Screenings: ‘Reaching Out, Drawing In’ Exhibitions, National Portrait Gallery and Orleans House Gallery.
